2024: The Year in Review
Happy holidays from CLASSE-IT! 2024 was another busy year for us. On the personnel front, we welcomed
Samantha Weeks to the web applications development team. Sam brings a wealth of experience in Java programming, and she has already made a big impact on
BeamPASS and other
CLASSE web applications. We are thrilled to have her on board!
This year, we devoted significant time and effort to a few major projects: upgrading to a new Linux operating system, extending IT services to Wilson West, and revamping our central storage and infrastructure clusters for improved resilience against hardware failures. At the same time, we provided day-to-day support to our community of over 1000 active users and collaborators, including 270 CLASSE personnel. Some notable statistics from the past year include:
- 3100 new ServiceRequest tickets submitted by 500 different users, generating over 22,000 emails.
- 240,000 jobs submitted to the CLASSE Compute Farm, consuming over 160 CPU years of computer time.
- 73,000 pages sent to our printers.
- 420 TB of raw data collected by CHESS users.
- Over 180 computers and servers deployed or upgraded.
- Approximately 150 GitLab projects created or updated (out of 370 total) by CLASSE users.
- Over 1000 GitLab issues resolved across 9 ongoing web application projects.
In particular, for the CHESS HMF and XLEAP beamlines currently under construction, we:
- Provisioned nearly 350 TB of data storage.
- Ran over 1.5 miles of network cables.
- Made over 200 fiber optic splices.
- Installed over 20 network switches.
Whether it's maintaining steady user operations or introducing new technological capabilities, the CLASSE-IT team is proud to be a part of all the research at the lab. Throughout our work, we rely on the support of our colleagues across CLASSE -- many thanks to everyone for your invaluable help. We wish you all a restful winter break, and see you in 2025!
General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our
NewsLetter and via
CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.
Unless other arrangements have been made,
CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see
SystemExpectations.
