Linux At Home

If you run Linux at home and want to build software that will eventually run at CLASSE, or if you want to run software that was built at CLASSE, you must use a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 (RHEL 7) derivative. At the lab we use Scientific Linux 7 (SL7) -- this is the same source code base as RHEL 7 and CentOS 7.

If you run Linux at home solely as an office desktop (mail, web browser, multimedia, and remote access to CLASSE computers), then we highly recommend you use a RHEL derivative such as SL7, or CentOS.

Unfortunately, the CLASSE-IT group has no experience with and will not be able to provide any real assistance with any non-RHEL 7 based distrubtions (Ubuntu, Arch, Debian, OpenSUSE, Slackware, etc.).

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
