Theft of login credentials: Phishing

Many people at Cornell recently received a fraudulent message which was designed to steal their Google login credentials. Attempts like this are called "Phishing".

CIT maintains a reference list of phishing emails that have been seen at Cornell: If the one you receive is not listed there, please report it to them. We cannot do so on your behalf since we don't have access to your mailbox.

One easy way to verify the links in any email message or PDF is to hover your mouse over the link without clicking on it. After a second or two, the true web address of the link will appear in a box near your mouse (aka Tooltip). If the address in this box does not match the address written in the email message, do not click on it -- the sender is trying to deceive you.

Linux CUDA Development Suite Update to 8.0

  • The CUDA Linux development suite, for Scientific Linux 6 (SL6), has been upgraded to 8.0. All tools, libraries, sample code and complied CUDA examples are in /nfs/opt/cuda-8-0.sl6.
  • The nVidia Graphics Card drivers (version 367.44 for CUDA 8 compatible cards) will be pushed to all CLASSE SL6 system tomorrow (06-Dec-2016). You may need to reboot your system to load the new drivers.

Linux TeX/LaTeX Update

  • The TeX Live 2016 distribution, available on all CLASSE SL6 and SL7 Linux workstations, has been updated with the latest patches and features.

CLASSE-Managed Windows Update Changes

We have rescheduled our weekly software maintenance window for CLASSE-managed Windows computers as follows:
  • Desktops: between 2AM and 7AM on Tuesdays.
  • Laptops: between 2AM and noon on Tuesdays.

  • Your computer may reboot during these periods several times, although we don't expect it to exceed 3 times.
  • Laptops: If you leave your laptop on and connected to our network overnight on Monday night, the reboots can happen before you come in. If your laptop is not left connected, the reboots will happen within 30 minutes of connecting to our network, though it may take up to 1.5 hours to complete all reboots in the worst case.
  • It is possible, but much less likely given the interplay between Windows and third party updates, that your computer will not reboot every week.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
