CLASSE Windows License Server outage (PC176) Tuesday at 10AM
We will be migrating the CLASSE Windows License server (PC176) to winlm.classe.cornell.edu on our HA cluster starting at 10AM. We expect the license server to be back up and running by 11AM. The actual expected outage is likely to be < 5 minutes, but if there are issues could take a little longer. Users should see no impact after the outage, the existing naming continues to work.
Use your CLASSE userid and password for VPN with RedRover
RedRover wireless access will replace "LNS Protected" wireless access in Newman Lab on Wednesday, May 15.
If you need to print on Lab printers or access Inventor's Vault while connected to the RedRover wireless network, you'll have to connect to the CLASSE VPN.
Many people already make use of the CLASSE VPN when they work from home or elsewhere outside the Lab.

access to the "LNS Protected" network will not be going away. There is no need to use the VPN if your laptop computer is connected to the wired
"LNS Protected" network. With Windows 7, it is important to make sure you go into network and sharing center, change adapter settings, and right click and disable the wireless network to actually connect to the wired "LNS Protected" network. Just plugging in a cable will not cause this change.
If you have a CLASSE laptop and need to use the wired "LNS Protected" network instead of wireless RedRover and currently do
not have wired access, please contact the CLASSE computer group immediately by sending email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Note: All students get charged for their use of off-campus bandwidth (aka NUBB charges), so Lab-supplied devices should be registered for RedRover by staff or faculty.
Most of the telephones in Newman Lab were replaced by Voice Over IP (VOIP) sets this past week. If you have any issues with your new telephones or telephone service in general, ask for help from the IT Service Desk by phone at (607) 255-5500, by e-mail at email@example.com

As we proceed with the migration to a unified CLASSE computing facility, we will be standardizing our management of and support for CLASSE printers. Moving forward, all managed CLASSE computers will automatically be given access to all CLASSE printers via the CUPS print server. Rather than requiring individual users to install their own printers and drivers, we have chosen this centralized model based on our experience with LEPP printers. Adopting the CUPS print server at LEPP has significantly reduced the lab's support costs, and it enhances collaboration between our numerous buildings and groups. Users on CLASSE managed computers have the ability to set their default preferred printer, and when needed they have the ability to print to any other printer in the lab.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.
Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM
