LNX201 reboot - 10am Tuesday 11/24
LNX201 will be rebooted at 10am Tuesday, 11/24, and is expected to be down for approximately 5 minutes. This reboot is meant to address recent performance problems due to clear stale processes and file handles. After the reboot, LNX201 will be running with an updated kernel that includes bug fixes useful for this general-purpose login node.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Although we may not be in town, the CLASSE IT group will be monitoring our network, systems, and ticket tracking system. Please don't hesitate to email
service-classe@cornell.edu with any problems or questions, and remember that our
Call List is available for emergencies.
Please leave computers turned on at night
Please do
NOT shut down your desktop computer when you leave for the day or weekend; this includes over the Thanksgiving holiday. Software updates and virus scans normally happen at night when nobody is around. If you turn off the computer, those housekeeping jobs will run as soon as you turn it on, making it very unresponsive, sometimes for as long as an hour.
General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our
NewsLetter and via
CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.
Unless other arrangements have been made,
CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see
SystemExpectations.
