Submitting a potential job to Newman Lab Machine Shop

Please submit the following files via email to (tdn29@cornell.edu).

1) A PDF drawing of part with dimensions, tolerancing and quantity needed.

2) A STEP file including model (to Scale) of part to be made or modified. (Revision Level of the model MUST match the drawing) (STEP files are NOT required IF the parts have a drawing number and are in the Vault.)

ALL PARTS FOR USE IN THE TUNNEL OR A BEAMLINE SHOULD BE ASSIGNED A PART NUMBER AND FORMALLY RELEASED!! Contact either Scott Hartman (swh77) or Jessica Turco (jlt244) to be assigned a part number.

3) An account number job is to be charged to.

4) Desired turnaround timeframe.

Please keep the following “rules” in mind when creating drawings:

  1. Drawings should have a minimum of three views to accurately portray the shape of the part and orientation of holes and features. A scaled down isometric view can also be helpful for complicated parts.
  2. Place dimensions on finished edges and features or important centerlines whenever possible. The origin point should be consistent throughout the drawing (Dimensions should always come from the same edges in different views unless design constraints dictate otherwise) The preferred origin point is the upper left hand corner of a view, although there are times that an alternate origin makes more sense.
  3. Dimensions should be placed in such a way that no numbers need to be assumed or determined by the machinist. Dimensions should never be given twice on the same drawing unless one is designated as reference.
  4. ALWAYS place dimensions on the view that best shows that feature. Unless necessary, avoid dimensioning to hidden lines.
  5. Avoid placing dimensions on the part view. They should always be placed outside the part.
  6. Communicate hole tapping needs accurately. Always include depth (thru is acceptable), and pitch of holes. (i.e. ¼”-20, ¼”-28, M8x1.0, M8x1.25). Thread depth is hard to measure exactly, therefore the depth call-out is always treated as a minimum.
  7. Consolidate call-outs when multiples of the same feature exist in a view, for example 4X 0.500 Thru indicates that there are (4) 0.500 diameter holes in that view.
  8. Ensure that all blind hole notes and counterbores are annotated on the face that you want the hole to start from. If they are intended to come from the opposite side, clearly note (FROM BACK SIDE) at the end of the hole call-out.
  9. Don’t over-dimension or over-tolerance your designs. When you over-dimension, the critical requirements are lost in the noise, so only assign tolerances to mission-critical features.
